This set of routes of different lengths all start from the car park on the top of Reigate Hill.
The approximate return distance of each of the routes is given in km. The time taken will depend on the condition of the path at the time of year as well as your own basic speed. It is probably best to assume a speed of 10 km/h plus a stop at your destination.
You are legally entitled to cycle along a bridle path. You should give way to walkers and treat them courteously. When coming up behind someone on foot, give them audible warning of your approach. If you meet a horse, you should pull into the side of the path and only proceed when the horse rider indicates that it is safe to do so. If you come up behind a horse, slow down, give a clear audible warning of your approach and only overtake if the rider indicates that it is safe to do so.
You are not entitled to cycle on a footpath.
BP = bridle path. The numbers of the bridle paths are given so that you can identify on the rights of way map (http://www6.surreycc.gov.uk/fmwebwings/default.asp) is you so wish.
Beginners' route, suitable for children 6 years and above.
The whole route is either off-road or on a quiet private road with a small section on a cul-de-sac leading to the Sportsman P.H. Apart from a small climb at the start of the route, the ride is flat. Even in winter, it is not particularly muddy.
From the car park, cross the footbridge over the A217 (BP 34). Continue on this BP, across Colley Hill, entering and leaving the National Trust property by the wooden gates.
Keep on the path until you reach the road. Turn R and continue on the road, crossing the M25 until you reach Mogador Road, about 50 m from the Sportsman P.H. Turn L.
Return by the same route.
This route has a downhill and uphill stretch (easy gradient).
After leaving the Sportsman, turn R onto private road. Take the second BP (101) on the left (just before the white house). Continue on this BP until you reach a crossroads by Margery Wood car park. Turn R onto the road (BP 32), which leads through a gate onto Colley Hill. Turn L and follow the BP back to Reigate Hill car park.
Listed below are two routes to Walton-on-the Hill. They both involve a crossing of the Dorking Road (B2032) along which cars travel too fast.
Both routes are suitable for children who can ride a bicycle competently. They should be carefully supervised crossing the B2032.
Route A is flat, fairly even and, even in winter, not too muddy. Route B can be muddier and has an easy uphill/downhill section. Part of it crosses a grassy section that is cut up by horses' hooves and, in summer, can be very bumpy.
Follow the route towards the Sportsman P.H. Immediately after crossing the M25, turn L onto a BP (101). Continue on this BP until you reach the Dorking Road. Turn R. After about 30 m, take the BP (86) on the L. Follow the BP until you reach the village by the Blue Ball P.H. and Mere Pond.
To return on Route B (below), return on the same BP. On reaching the Dorking Road, cross and continue on the BP (86) opposite. Follow the BP in an approximate straight line until you reach a point where a second BP (114) crosses (about 1.5 km, signposted). Turn R on this BP and continue to the Sportsman P.H.
Take the route to the Sportsman P.H., as described above. Continue straight past the Sportsman along an ill-defined grassy BP (114) bordering a small wood. At the end of the wood, another BP (86) crosses. Turn L onto this BP. Follow it, in an approximately straight line, until you reach the Dorking Road. Cross the road and continue along the BP to Walton-on-the-Hill.
This route is fairly flat. The section along Tye Lane can get fairly muddy in wet weather. It involves crossing the Dorking Road (see comments above). It is suitable for children who can ride a bicycle competently.
Take route towards the Sportsman, as described above. Immediately after crossing the M25, turn L onto a BP (101). Continue on this BP until another BP crosses. Turn L onto this path and continue along it until you reach the Dorking Road. Cross over into Chequers Lane. Take the first turn on the L (Sturts Lane). Turn L to cross the M25 and take the BP (494) around Frith Park Farm. Turn R at a T junction; you are now on Tye Lane. When the lane widens, as you come onto National Trust property, take the L fork. Continue, crossing a small road, until you reach Headley Common Road. Cross into the car park, at the end of which is a tea kiosk.
Return by the same route.
This route contains a moderately steep hill. It involves cycling along a B road for about 1 km. It is suitable for children who have been trained to cycle on public roads and have received a competency certificate.
Take the route to Headley Heath as described above. Leaving the car park, turn L on Headley Common Road. After about 1 km, take the BP (506) on the R, just before the houses start on that side of the road. Shortly after passing underneath the M25, ignore the BP on your R. Continue to the end of the BP and turn R onto Hurst Road. Shortly after the road swings R, by the junction with Ebbisham Lane, take the rough road almost immediately on the L. Turn R into Sandlands Road. Turn L into Walton Road. Turn R by the pond onto the common. Take the route back as described under Walton-on-the-Hill.
This route contains a moderately steep hill. The section from Walton-on-the-Hill to Epsom Downs is not muddy. It is suitable for children who can ride a bicycle competently.
Take the route to Walton-on-the-Hill described above. When you reach the pond, turn L along Walton Street. Take first R into Sandlands Road. At the end of Sandlands Road, turn L (unmade-up road). At the end of the road, turn R onto Hurst Road, which swings round to the L. Go straight on into Ebbisham Lane (fairly steep and pot holed). At the end of the lane, cross the horse track (look out for horses!) and continue straight on, uphill, on an ill-defined grassy track. At the top of the hill, turn R onto a BP, which leads you over the racecourse and across Epsom Downs. On the far side, there is a tea kiosk on the other side of the road (Tattenham Corner Road, B290).
Return by the same route.
This route contains a moderate hill. It involves cycling along a quiet lane for about 1 km and a B road for about 1.5 km. It is suitable for children who have been trained to cycle on public roads and have received a competency certificate.

At the pond, turn L along Walton Street. Take first R into Sandlands Road. At the end of Sandlands Road, turn L (unmade-up road). Return over the racecourse. Continue straight on where the path goes L to Walton-on-the Hill. Near he foot of the hill, turn L through a wood; on emerging onto another BP, turn sharp R onto a broad BP (Sheep Walk, BP127). At the road (Walton Road), turn L. At the next junction bear R, under the M25. At the T junction, turn L (B2033). On the far side of Headley Village, past (and ignoring) the R turn to Leatherhead (Mill Way), take the next BP on L, which leads into Tye Lane (BP494). After about 2/3 km, fork L. After crossing the M25 at Frith Park Farm, fork R (Sturts Lane). Turn R on Chequers Lane (B2220). At the T junction, continue straight over the road (with extreme care - fast traffic) onto a BP (BP 100). (Ignore BP branching R, signposted M25 crossing). After about 1 ˝km, after crossing golf course, turn R at the X roads of BPs (BP 101). On reaching road, turn R over M25. At the end of the road, turn R onto a BP (BP 34), which leads over Colley Hill back to Reigate Hill Car Park.
